Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day! Please read the following:

On Thursday, September 29, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt (or an orange article of clothing if they don't have an orange shirt) to recognize Orange Shirt Day and National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for everyone to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community. Orange Shirt day began in 2013 when residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at residential school. September 30 is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. The intention of this day is to recognize and honor residential school survivors, their families and communities. It also ensures that public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. This is a non-operation day for the CBE. Our students will be engaging in learning prior to September 30 to honor this important day and to show our school community’s commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action. Today, the students played a version of dodgeball in PE today! They seemed to have fun!

In Music, we continued to learn about tempo and listened to part of the Vivaldi Four Seasons concerto. The whole concerto is 42 minutes long! If your students want to listen to it they just have to type it into Google. We practiced tempo by playing with rhythm sticks, egg shakers, and maracas. The students enjoyed playing and practicing to different tempos. 

In Writing, we finished writing different beginnings such as thoughts/questions and sounds. We came up with examples. 


In Math, we started discussing and practicing adding and subtracting. We had great discussions about adding and subtracting. We did some examples as a class explaining where to start, what to do with regrouping and borrowing while subtracting. It was a great start!



We read Chapter 19 and 20 of Pax today! As your child what happened!

We learned about the E in CAFE. It stands for expanding vocabulary. Students provided ideas and discussion of different strategies for learning and expanding our vocabulary while reading. 




For Social, we discussed how we should feel when we go to school, for Orange Shirt Day. We want to make sure that every child matters and feels a certain way a school. We want to make sure that we recognize how these students and Indigenous children felt when they had their lives taken away by something that they were looking forward to attending. We created leaves with the brainstorm of how we should feel at school as students, which were placed up on the Learning Commons wall as an Orange Shirt Day display. 



Please wear some sort of orange clothing tomorrow to commemorate the day!

 Good afternoon Families, This is Miss. Hillier's last week with us, as she has another opportunity at another school for the remainder of the year. If you have questions, please contact the office.  In PE, today, the students practiced their skipping skills. First, the students set it down and practiced jumping front and back or side to side. At the end of the class, the students tested themselves to see who could do it the longest.  In Music, we practiced a new pattern game called Sevens. Have a look here: Sevens . We read more of our novel Restart.  In Math, we practice understanding positional coordinates on a coordinate plane. We used our knowledge from our life size coordinate plane from Friday.  Good afternoon! Hope you are able to take part in some Indigenous activities tomorrow for National Truth and Reconciliation Day! There is NO school tomorrow in honour of this day! So please enjoy the long weekend. Please make sure that you fill out the consent to be photographed so I can post pictures of your children doing activities at school! I will be contacting parents who have not done this to double check their consent.  Today in PE, the students played Gaga Ball to start. Once the students were eliminated they were to take part in one of three Indigenous games. There was the hoop darts, which the students took  turns trying to throw a feather in the center of the hula hoop. The next game they could try would be double ball, where s tudents each use a stick to try and pass a double ball (two balls attached together by a string in the middle) to one another.   Good afternoon Lovely Grade 5 Parents and Guardians, I hope you had a lovely day! We sure did at school! Tomorrow is Spirit Day at school so please wear Purple (if you can) for Grade 5! We are also going on a walking Field Trip tomorrow to the Coventry/Country Hills Storm Pond. Please make sure that your child is dressed for the weather as it may rain in the afternoon. We are going from about 1:45-3:15.  This morning the students had their first music class. We learned about different vocabulary for music terms and about different instruments. We then played Rhythm Master! The students had a blast! We continued to work on our writing piece about either their summer vacations or what they are excited and nervous about in Grade 5. We are almost complete so it will be nice to hear what students did over the summer or what they are looking forward to this year.
