Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day! Please read the following:

On Thursday, September 29, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt (or an orange article of clothing if they don't have an orange shirt) to recognize Orange Shirt Day and National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for everyone to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community. Orange Shirt day began in 2013 when residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at residential school. September 30 is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. The intention of this day is to recognize and honor residential school survivors, their families and communities. It also ensures that public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. This is a non-operation day for the CBE. Our students will be engaging in learning prior to September 30 to honor this important day and to show our school community’s commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action. Make sure you read our blog posts to learn more about the activities and learning students are doing in their classrooms and within Northern Light.

Today, the students played a version of dodgeball in PE today! They seemed to have fun!

In Music, we continued to learn about tempo and listened to part of the Vivaldi Four Seasons concerto. The whole concerto is 42 minutes long! If your students want to listen to it they just have to type it into Google. We practiced tempo by playing with rhythm sticks, egg shakers, and maracas. The students enjoyed playing and practicing to different tempos. 

In Writing, we finished writing different beginnings such as thoughts/questions and sounds. We came up with examples. 


In Math, we started discussing and practicing adding and subtracting. We had great discussions about adding and subtracting. We did some examples as a class explaining where to start, what to do with regrouping and borrowing while subtracting. It was a great start!



We read Chapter 19 and 20 of Pax today! As your child what happened!

We learned about the E in CAFE. It stands for expanding vocabulary. Students provided ideas and discussion of different strategies for learning and expanding our vocabulary while reading. 




For Social, we discussed how we should feel when we go to school, for Orange Shirt Day. We want to make sure that every child matters and feels a certain way a school. We want to make sure that we recognize how these students and Indigenous children felt when they had their lives taken away by something that they were looking forward to attending. We created leaves with the brainstorm of how we should feel at school as students, which were placed up on the Learning Commons wall as an Orange Shirt Day display. 



Please wear some sort of orange clothing tomorrow to commemorate the day!

  Good afternoon Lovely Grade 5 Parents and Guardians, I hope you had a lovely day! We sure did at school! Tomorrow is Spirit Day at school so please wear Purple (if you can) for Grade 5! We are also going on a walking Field Trip tomorrow to the Coventry/Country Hills Storm Pond. Please make sure that your child is dressed for the weather as it may rain in the afternoon. We are going from about 1:45-3:15.  This morning the students had their first music class. We learned about different vocabulary for music terms and about different instruments. We then played Rhythm Master! The students had a blast! We continued to work on our writing piece about either their summer vacations or what they are excited and nervous about in Grade 5. We are almost complete so it will be nice to hear what students did over the summer or what they are looking forward to this year.  Good afternoon! A reminder tomorrow is Healthy Hunger day! Kernels will be dropped off tomorrow. Thursday is Festive Hat day!  In PE, the students are working with scooters and it looks like so much fun! In Writing, students are working on wrapping up their pieces of writing with their ending. We have discussed the different strategies to use when ending a piece of writing. So, the students are going to wrap up their stories by using two of these strategies, revealing the character's trait that they learn about themselves, and revealing the adaptation that their character has gained from its journey!  In Math, the students reviewed the decimal place value strategy that was learned over the last couple of classes. We then discussed comparing decimals and reviewing what the <, >, = mean when comparing numbers. Students then practiced this task with 15 questions.  In Word Work, students worked with their groups to find different words that followed the patterns of their words.
