Hello Families!  Tomorrow is Christmas Festive or PJ day! Your child can come dressed in PJs or Christmas Festive sweaters or dress wear.  In PE, students were practicing their passing in soccer.  In Music, students were practicing their Canadian music projects and will begin to present in two classes. In Math, we looked at decimals on a number line. We learned that there are decimal numbers between whole numbers! We learned that between whole numbers are decimals with tenths. Between tenths there are hundredths and between hundredths are thousandths. Give it a try at home with the Zoomable number line to practice. We also watched some videos to help give a visual to the idea of decimals on the number line! Have a look at the website:  https://www.mathswithmum.com/decimals-on-a-number-line/  In Writing, the students began to write their main events on the computers and add more detail and more description. The stories are coming along nicely.  This afternoon, the students listened to

Good evening!  Indoor Recess Fun! Today in PE, the students are learning how to dribble the soccer ball! The game they played was similar to another they played earlier this year.  2 Teams   à   One team starts as the dribblers and the other team starts as throwers Dribblers: Start at far end of the gym in safe zone When the music starts they try to dribble to the other safe zone, grab a bean bag, and then dribble back If their ball touches a pylon at any point they must go back to the safe in which they were last in Remind dribbles to stay in control with little touches and to trap the ball whenever they feel necessary Remind students to not use their hands when trying to reach the safe zone Throwers: Each thrower gets one ball… that will be the only ball they use When the dribblers begin, the throwers will attempt to hit the soccer balls with their dodgeball Throwers are NOT trying to hit people Throwers must throw from behind the benches/yellow cones but can enter the middle to ret

Keep up to date on the FIFA World Cup action!  In Music, students are continuing to work on their Canadian artist work! We will begin performances soon! We are almost done Thirst we have two chapters left.  In Math, we are continuing on with decimals. Today, we discussed the thousandths place value and its relation to the tenths and hundredths place value. Students then practiced with their task and continued on in their rotation through our math stations. In Writing, students continued to write their main event of their story and they will then begin to write their mains on the computer in the coming days! During the afternoon, the students work through their reading

Good evening! Today in PE, they continued learning how to curl! In Music, the students are continuing to research and learn about Canadian musicians. They are going to begin practicing for their performances.  Today, we had a mystery meeting with a class who is also reading our class novel Thirst. We asked questions back and forth asking where they were located, popular foods in the area, their favourite parts of Thirst, and predictions about Thirst. It was a very engaging and fun time.  In Math, did a bit of review, then the students had a task related to our review and our lesson. After they finished the task they were to move on to their math stations, while I worked with a small group building their skills with decimals.  Students had some time to continue to write their main event. We are going to continue to build these to help create the biggest part of our stories.  This afternoon, we introduced a new reading station. It is reading response. It is where students think of books

Good evening, Tomorrow is picture retake day! Dress to impress for those retaking photos.  A note from Admin: Hello families, Parent / Teacher Conferences will be in person at Northern Lights School this Thursday night (November 24) between 4:30 - 8:00 pm and Friday (November 25) during the day between 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. There is no school for students on Friday. Families have their own booked 15-minute slot so there will not be other families in the classrooms at the same time. To help them stay on track, we ask that you arrive at the time you have booked. When arriving, teachers would love to greet you with a smile and a wave, rather than a handshake. Teachers will also likely wear a mask during your meeting time and may have their meeting table set up with additional room for physical distancing.   Hand sanitizer is available upon entering the school and on the wall in every classroom to be used at your convenience. We hope you will pop by the Learning Commons for our Book Fair to

Good Afternoon Families, Here are some notes from the office: LIBRARY BOOKS   Students are once again able to take books home from our Learning Commons. Just a friendly reminder that students must return their library book each week. We have sent overdue notices home to families whose children have late books.     Lost or damaged library books must be paid for. Mrs. Barrowcliff has begun to send invoices home indicating the cost of the books. Please help us get all books back each week so all students can enjoy them and there is always lots of variety to choose from.       SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR   We are very excited to announce we will be having an in-person book fair during our Teacher Conferences. The book fair in the Northern Lights School Learning Commons on the evening of Thursday, November 24 from 4:30 – 7:45, as well as the morning of Friday, November 25 from 8:30 – 12:30.     We would love families to come by any time between these hours. Books make excellent Christmas gifts an

Good afternoon Families! Please be sure to sign up for Conferences on the My Conferences website. Conferences are next Thursday and Friday.  A reminder to look at Mrs. Brinson's emails, there are notes in there about the Happy Hungry and Treat days so you can order for them.  In PE, the students played the same game as yesterday and got to vote on the name of the game.  In Music, students are doing research projects on Canadian Musicians and Bands. It is surprsing to see their faces when I show them different musicians that are Canadian and they didn't know.  In Math, we continued to do our decimal work. Today we did a Which One Doesn't Belong getting the students to use the brain and explain why certain boxes of numbers did not belong. They had to make sure that they gave a reason why. We then worked on identifying different images and writing out the decimals in the correct manner.  We began to look at the main event of our stories. We discussed the different features th

Good Evening! Photo proofs went home the other day. Please make sure that if you would like to purchase photos please make sure that you either order online or send money in with your child. If you did not like the proofs, photo retakes are next Wednesday!  A reminder that parent-teacher conferences are next Thursday eve and Friday until 2pm. Please make sure you book your appointment online.  In PE, the students played a game that Mr. Newton came up. It had no name so they were in charge of coming up with a name as they played. The game involved two teams and they were to throw items into the other teams goal. To protect the goal there were goalies who had pool noodles that they were to use to protect the goal.  We finished up writing the middle parts of our stories and we will be moving on to the main event. The main event will be the part where the most important features will be revealed.  In Math, we kept working on decimals and understanding that they are pieces of a whole. They

Good afternoon! In PE, the students played another take on a dodgeball game! Looked like fun! In Music, we did Boomwhackers and played the instrument to some fun songs! The students and I had a blast.  For Thirst we worked on our projects and the students answered some reflection questions and related themselves to our main character Minni.  In Math, we develed deeper into the understanding of decimals. We learned that decimals are pieces of a whole and used manipulatives to help explain the concept. We took the ones, tens and hundreds to help understand that if we take pieces of them out of the whole that they are parts which then in turn relate to a decimal. The decimals are on the right hand side of the whole numbers and have a related place value to those of our whole number place values. We will continue to explore decimals.  In Writing, students are working on finishing their middles of their stories.  In our Health/Wellness class, the students were working on skits to help soli
