Good afternoon Lovely Grade 5 Parents and Guardians,

I hope you had a lovely day! We sure did at school!

Tomorrow is Spirit Day at school so please wear Purple (if you can) for Grade 5! We are also going on a walking Field Trip tomorrow to the Coventry/Country Hills Storm Pond. Please make sure that your child is dressed for the weather as it may rain in the afternoon. We are going from about 1:45-3:15.

This morning the students had their first music class. We learned about different vocabulary for music terms and about different instruments. We then played Rhythm Master! The students had a blast!

We continued to work on our writing piece about either their summer vacations or what they are excited and nervous about in Grade 5. We are almost complete so it will be nice to hear what students did over the summer or what they are looking forward to this year. We moving forward we will be looking at how to create rich paragraphs by expanding and adding details.

In Math, we started our Area and Perimeter Unit. We started by watching and interesting video where the person cut a piece of paper and then reassembled the pieces to see that the shapes were the same area. We discussed what the students knew from Grade 4 about area and perimeter and then practiced a few pieces of it. We are dusting off those summer cobwebs and getting back into a rhythm with math!

We continued to read our class Read Aloud- Pax. We read two chapters and the students continued to listen and jot notes and draw images of what they are hearing.

After lunch, I gave the students time to work on their Pax pages in their Visual Journals, while also providing them time to read and catch up on other work. Next week we will begin our Silent Reading and Cafe time, so please make sure that students have a book they can bring from home and hopefully the Library will be open for taking books out!

We continued to work on creating a welcoming and open classroom by playing team building games and creating a great classroom atmosphere. We played a version of the game Telestrations (Picture Telephone). The students had to write a statement that was to be drawn by another student as it went down the line to the different team members. It was quite fun because some of the guesses and drawings were fun and creative! We will continue to do team building activities throughout the year to keep the classroom rapport.

At the end of the day, we had some time to continue to work on items that had not been complete such as  our Art ethching project, our All About Me posters, and other work from the day.

A reminder we are going on a walking Field Trip tomorrow so dress for the weather (it may rain) and walking! Also, wear Purple tomorrow!

Have a great night!

Miss. Hillier
