Happy Friday!!
I hope you had a wonderful week. Our grade 5 class had a busy week! Picture day is next Wednesday Ocotber 19, please make sure your child is dressed their best!
This morning the students wrote in their gratitude journals about their favourite season and why it is their favourite! I am excited to read which one is their favourite!
This morning we also had a virtual smudge and mini assembly with the school welcoming back Mr. Scout to smudge and bless our school for our Field Study Friday kickoff. Mr. Scout came to us virtually and smudged the school and told us a story about the land and how it can be important to us. After we had the virtual meeting, I asked the students to help introduce me to Field Study Friday and what they have done over the past years because I am new to the idea. They gave me some great ideas and explanations.
For our novel study, Thirst we reviewed the water crisis that is happening around the world and looked at specifically at Mumbai because our setting takes palce their. We watched some videos explain the importance of water and how different organizations are trying to help countries around the world.
In Math, we continued to discuss and practice algebra. We discussed that it is similar to looking for the blank to solve a math problem and how the variables (letters) represent this now. We practiced and examined different math operation ones to help us see the different ways to solve. We also looked at word problems and how to create math sentences based off the question and then solving for the variables. We will continue to practice this in the coming days.
In PE, the students have started the basketball unit. Today, we practiced shooting the ball in different positions. The students were reminded of the BEEF acroynm representing: Bending our knees, Eyes on the backboard, Elbows being aligned and bent with our hand, and Following through when we release the ball. We played a game at the end to help them continue to practice!I hope you have a lovely weekend. Here is to a great full week next week!
