Hello Families!
A gentle reminder that it is has now become winter with the snow falling today, so please make sure that your child is prepared for school. Please check that they have boots, winter jackets, mittens/gloves, snowpants, and hats. It was super cold and windy on our field today and some students were not prepared.
Today in PE, we started our floor hockey unit. We started by learning how to hold the stick in ready position and bending our knees while keeping our eyes up. We practiced by stick handling around pylons set up in the gym. We then moved to the game Pirates, where there were five students to start who had to go and try to steal the other students' balls. If the Pirate stole the ball then the student who lost their ball became a Pirate.
In Writing, the students asked for one more period to write and plan their beginning and middle. Tomorrow we will discuss how to add suspense into the story.
In Math, we moved on to learning about order of operations when dealing with multiple terms in a math sentence. Students learned to use the acroynm BEDMAS (Brackets, Exponents (which we do not use in grade 5), Division, Multiplication, Adding, Subtracting). Students practiced these on white boards. Tomorrow we will add a trick to these pieces. The students did quite well!
We read Chapter 17 of Thirst today!
This afternoon, the students had to make something with the materials they had to hold 3 books without falling over. The students had a blast!
If you are driving around tonight, drive safely; if you are outside, dress warmly; if you are at home, stay warm under a fuzzy blanket!
